Tubal Reanastomosis

Tubal ligation reversal as outpatient microsurgery results in a fast recovery, with a low cost, and a high pregnancy rate. This approach to tubal ligation reversal makes it the best option for women who have undergone tubal ligation and who now want a second chance to have more children.

Tubal Ligation Does NOT Have to Be Permanent

Tubal ligation is often considered to be a permanent method of female sterilization, and most women who undergo tubal ligation are told that it is irreversible, the tubes cannot be untied, and that they will need in vitro fertilization if they wish to get pregnant again. However, in most cases, tubal reversal is possible.

Why Not In-Vitro Fertilization for Pregnancy after Tubal Ligation?

Each cycle of IVF can cost from $5,000 to $10,000 every month. For reanastomosis, there is only a one-time cost that may be less expensive than a single cycle of IVF.

Emotional highs and lows follow each cycle of IVF, including the hormonal fluctuations from the medications, as well as the emotional lows if pregnancy is not achieved. With tubal ligation reversal, you use natural cycles without the requirement of fertility drugs.

IVF has a lower overall success rate than tubal reversal. Fully two-thirds of tubal reversal patients may find themselves pregnant one year after the procedure.

Success of Tubal Ligation Reversal

The success of tubal ligation reversal depends on several factors, including the method of tubal ligation, the remaining tubal length, and the age of the woman. The best way to find out what your prognosis may be after tubal reversal is to review the operative report from your tubal ligation surgery. A copy of your operative report can be obtained from the hospital where your tubal ligation was performed. We provide a Records Release form that you can print and fill out to have your records sent to us.

How Tubal Ligation Reversal is Performed
Tubal ligation reversal involves microsurgical techniques to open and reconnect the fallopian tube segments that remained after a tubal ligation procedure. Usually, there are two remaining fallopian tube segments, the proximal segment that emerges from the uterus, and the distal segment that ends with the fimbria next to the ovary. Microsurgical tubal reanastomosis is the technique that connects these separated parts of the fallopian tube.

What To Expect After Tubal Ligation Reversal Surgery
Although any operation carries some risk, with careful and precise microsurgical and anesthesia procedures, the post-operative complication rate after outpatient tubal ligation surgery is extremely low. The success rate for reopening the tubes is over 90%, and two thirds of patients become pregnant by one year after the procedure.

Patients are typically discharged from the facility within 4 hours following the surgery, and can expect to resume normal activities within 7-14 days.

Pregnancy After Tubal Reversal
We ask patients to do a pregnancy test as soon as they have missed a period, and inform us of all positive pregnancy tests. The main risk of tubal ligation reversal is ectopic pregnancy, which occurs in 10% of pregnancies after tubal surgery. Detected early, an ectopic or tubal pregnancy can be treated medically to avoid damage to the fallopian tube and the need for additional surgery. When a woman has a positive pregnancy test, we repeat blood serum HCG tests twice a week and perform a vaginal ultrasound when the HCG level reaches 1500 to look for the pregnancy sac.
